For the swinger, there is a great deal of intimacy in knowing that they can trust each other, even through sharing partners or sexual experiences outside of the boundaries of being a couple.

Although swinging may utilize a non-monogamy understanding, it is always an exchange and sharing of partners. It is not just sleeping around without any kind of consideration. By coming back together again each experience strengthens the bond between couples. This is the way it should feel; otherwise it will harm the marriage.

Everyone involved is typically in the loop. There are boundaries, rules to the degree that the couple needs them and certain code of conduct. These are usually strictly held to, by both parties in the swinger relationship. Most often, their swinging rules were decided upon entering into the swinger lifestyle, long after entering into the relationship.

Swingers generally state that they are living in an open relationship.  An open or swinging lifestyle hinges on trust and honesty between couples.  In examining the swinger lifestyle, several factors must be understood.

Like any other relationship, the need to keep their communications open is necessary.  Without communication, it will be hard to maintain trust with one another.  If either partner starts sneaking around and enjoying sexual experiences without the other’s knowledge, then everything breaks down. There is no way out at that point, trying to figure out what is wrong in their relationship will only bring about the end of the relationship. That may not always be the case, but trust is the key to open relationships.  Once it is lost, it is very hard to return to a safe place as a couple.

About 85 percent of swinger couples reported they were married, or in a committed relationship.  Most had more than 5 years as swingers together and an average of over 10 years of marriage.  Of these numbers, about 80 percent reported being happily married, but also happier as swingers. Other statistics are about equal in numbers of males, females, religious tendencies, politics, and other factors.

To improve the bond between couples may be hard to do.   Marriage counselors see couples needing things that cannot be healed in a psychological way.  Sometimes this kind of healing can stem from trying a new attitude, or a lifestyle change in the relationship.  Some couples find that being swinger’s works for them, because they have found an openness together from it.

It is usually less about the sexual activities and more about the hearts of two people. Swinging statistics are only part of the big picture.  Pulling together in any way that brings two people closer, is the key to making a real relationship last.  The mind, heart, soul, and bodies of two people need to feel loved.  It is simple as that.
